I have to be honest, I haven't read it for the same reason I don't read anything by this Pope- small amounts of orthodox teaching, wrapped up in the shiny foil of relativism, modernism and "let's make people feel good about their sins". Thanks for taking one for the team by reading it!
A very significant number of ancient Christian sources – from the sayings of the desert fathers and mothers (3rd-5th c.) to the later monastic rules (6th-12th c.) and even later mystical writings (13th-19th c.) – mention the common and frequent case of the spiritual novice entering the monastery, joining the lavra or discovering the gospel: within two years, the novice or beginner will start vehemently proclaiming that all the people who have devoted a whole life to the spiritual quest, to self scrutiny and to unbroken and deeply transformative religious practices actually lack real understanding and genuine devotion. This is the pattern a quick study of ancient Christian sources will reveal.
Excellent piece! It’s the insidious nature of modernism that is so dangerous. Just a little “poison”, either explicit or implicit, mixed in with truth is enough to mislead so many of the faithful. We are all sinners —however I shudder to think of the eternal consequences awaiting the hierarchy of our Church.
Matt 18:6
“But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea”.
I have friends who are angry when Catholics speaks of things wrong in the Church.
I have to mention to the them that keeping quiet of thing wrong in the Church had allowed those wrong to become pervasive. I have to cite the sexual abuses as a good reason of exposing wrong or errors in the Church, that had cost billions of dollars in compensation, this is not disregard lives that had been damaged, church buildings sold off to pay the compensations, the number of people who left in the church in disillusionment and disappointment, parishes closed or merged. These are the cost of keeping quiet of the wrongs and errors in the Church, that even the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI might had been caused this depth and the breadth of the sexual abuses that was allowed to go on unchecked because people kept quiet, I am not blaming the victims here, but those who tolerated these, and those who has the obligation to put a stop to this infection.
