Just In: Rome Reportedly Considering Schismatic Designation Not Only for SSPX Members but Also the Faithful
This will come as a shock for the many Catholics who assist at SSPX Masses.
According to a June 19 report published by Tribune Chrétienne, the Vatican is reportedly preparing a document in light of the coming Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) episcopal consecrations, that will not only see its clergy and leadership being designated schismatic (and therefor excommunicated), but also potentially the faithful who regularly attend its chapels.
This will come as a shock for the many Catholics who assist at SSPX Masses, who expected that only the bishops involved in the consecration would be excommunicated.
According to sources cited by Tribune Chrétienne, discussions in apostate Rome are no longer focused solely on the Society’s leadership. The proposed document could reportedly affect the entire structure of the SSPX, including its approximately 700 priests, seminaries, apostolates, and even the faithful who regularly participate in its sacramental life.
If such a measure were enacted, it would represent a historic escalation in the long-running conflict between Rome and the Society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. For decades, many Catholics attending SSPX chapels have considered themselves fully Catholic while seeking to preserve the traditional faith, liturgy, and sacraments. The possibility that these faithful could now be treated as participants in a schismatic body would be unprecedented.
The report follows recent comments by “Pope” Leo XIV regarding the SSPX’s planned priestly ordinations in July. Speaking at Castel Gandolfo, the Pope reportedly expressed concern over what he described as a refusal to accept certain teachings of the Second Vatican Council and warned of the consequences of a further rupture with Rome.
His remarks have been interpreted by many observers as a final “appeal” before stronger canonical measures are taken. But, some have expressed surprise that SSPX leaders have not been granted a direct audience with the “Pope” despite the seriousness of the situation and the potential significance of the upcoming ordinations.
The concerns raised by the report are not limited to the Society itself.
Several traditional communities that remain fully recognized by Rome are reportedly following developments with growing unease. The article points to what many perceive as inconsistent treatment of institutes attached to the traditional liturgy.
Some communities have faced restrictions regarding the celebration of the traditional Mass or the use of traditional ordination rites, while others have received permissions. Critics describe the situation as one marked by uncertainty and arbitrariness, making it increasingly difficult for traditional Catholics to understand Rome’s long-term intentions toward the ancient liturgical heritage of the Church.
The report also notes increasing firmness from Vatican officials such as “Cardinal” Arthur Roche and “Cardinal” Víctor Manuel Fernández, alongside the stance now associated with the usurper, “Pope” Leo XIV.
For many traditional Catholics, the most pressing question now is no longer simply the future of the SSPX, but whether Catholics who wish to preserve the traditional Roman Rite and remain faithful to the Church will continue to have a secure place within the synodal ecclesiastical structures.
The possibility that regular attendance at SSPX chapels could carry severe canonical consequences would mark a significant departure from previous decades of dialogue and accommodation. Such a move would affect countless families who have never regarded themselves as outside the Church and who have sought only to maintain the liturgical and spiritual traditions handed down through the centuries.
Should the reports prove accurate, the weeks following the SSPX ordinations in July could become a decisive turning point in the relationship between Rome and the traditionalist movement worldwide.

John 16:1-4: These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God. And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them...
