Lucky us. We can all sleep easy tonight. Not only that, Our Lord must feel pretty silly after the whole 40-days-in-the-desert business.
Why?
Well, according to Bishop Vicente de Paula Ferreira of Livramento de Nossa Senhora in Brazil, the devil is “imaginary”.
This controversy broke out after the said bishop questioned the theological basis for consecrating dioceses to St Michael the Archangel and suggested that the Church’s greatest “exorcism” should be directed, wait for it, against “social evils” such as homophobia, femicide, racism and crimes against Indigenous peoples.
Ladies and gentlemen, I rest my case: my theory that Synodality/Modernism/Liberalism causes severe brain rot similar to syphilis has been proved.
Ferreira asked in a social-media post on August 8, “Are there theological justifications for consecration to Saint Michael?” He then added, like the good little neo-Protestant that he is, that Christians consecrate themselves to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, before he questioned whether “the devil we fight” might be too imaginary and proposed a different understanding of exorcism focused on what he called “this legion of evils.”

Even those with only an inkling of Catholicism still left in their souls after 60 years of the postconciliar train wreck were rightly outraged, particularly those who regard devotion to St Michael and belief in the reality of the devil as important elements of our faith.
Ferreira’s little liberal anti-Catholic hot take comes right at the time when devotion to St Michael in Brazil has been expanding through the “Great Reconquest” initiative promoted by the Hesed Institute.
According to a recent report in Spanish Catholic media, 34 Brazilian dioceses have now been consecrated to St Michael through the initiative, and the most recent was the Archdiocese of Montes Claros in Minas Gerais.
The initiative began after a pilgrim image of St Michael arrived in Brazil from the Sanctuary of Monte Gargano in Italy. In August 2025, the image was received during a solemn session in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, where St Michael was proclaimed spiritual commander of the Brazilian nation. The initiative has subsequently taken the image through all five regions of the country.
One can also clearly see that the Evil One is behind Ferreira’s comments in the fact that they appeared right before the beginning of the traditional “Lent of St Michael.” This is a time of prayer, fasting and penance stretching from August 15 to September 29, which is the feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
As is usually the case with the enemies of Christ’s Catholic Church, this soggy-brained synodalist’s background came with zero surprises. He has openly identified himself with liberation theology (Marxism with a thin Catholic veneer) and, in a May 14 post, wrote that he had learned early to unite faith with life and declared that he was not afraid to identify himself as a liberation theologian.
He is also a member of the Brazilian bishops’ conference commission dealing with, you guessed it, integral ecology and mining.
Ferreira was praised for his public ministry, which has involved communities affected by the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão mining dam at Brumadinho in Minas Gerais. Since January 2019, he has accompanied victims and communities affected by the disaster.
His diocesan biography describes him as an advocate, not for Jesus Christ, Catholicism or the salvation of souls, but for human rights and the protection of “our common home.” How dear.
Ferreira has consequently become a prominent figure associated with the social-justice wing of the Brazilian Church.
After the controversy erupted, his supporters came to his defense by saying that Ferreira was “the victim of cruel and orchestrated attacks on social media by a far-right Catholic group.”
Yes, my dear Catholic friends, the best the synodal spawn could come up with was to call those who still believe in the reality of the devil and who are devoted to St. Michael the Archangel the “far-right.”
Calling orthodox Catholics “far-right” is the equivalent of using other weaponized and abused terms such as “antisemite” and “fascist.” In the face of the truth, using these as pejoratives no longer carry any weight.
